"The guys did a great job. The audience loved them, and they were fun
to work with."
.....Syracuse Symphony
Upstate New York has been all over the news, starting the month of February with record-breaking snow and icy temperatures. There are stories of 100" — and more — of the white stuff, of SUVs buried beyond their radio antennas, of houses entered through second-story windows, of temperatures plunging far far below 0.
Then there's the story of New Orleans' Own DUKES of Dixieland, flying in to Syracuse to play four concerts with the Syracuse Symphony. The presence of "New Orleans' Own" in the name of a group does not connote up-close-and-personal knowledge of extreme cold and snow. The DUKES arrived at the airport ready to play — to find they were minus their luggage and instruments. Several anxious flight arrivals later and everything had arrived. The six musicians headed to Cortland, NY, to play with the Symphony.
New Orleans Jazz brings out the best. The music lit a fire with the audiences, and the warmth and enthusiasm of the audiences stoked the band. Deep respect and the tip of a (fur-lined) hat must be paid to the audience members, who came out in the icy blast to enjoy the music when they could have stayed bundled up at home by the fireplace.
"Words can't express our appreciation for your amazing performance yesterday! I have never before had so much fun at a concert, and I think I speak for the entire audience.
We all hope you had a good time with us, and safely made it through the lake effect back to Syracuse.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!!!" wrote one fan.
"We just got home from a wonderful afternoon of music. I can't begin to describe how much I enjoyed the entire program. What a breath of fresh air with all the snow around. I can only imagine what you must have thought when you saw the snow. And here in Watertown we don't have nearly as much as you drove through. Thanks again for the fantastic music!" wrote another.
All the CDs the DUKES had with them were snapped up, and fans turned to the DUKES website for more. The DUKES arrived back in New Orleans on Monday — a 70 degree day on the lower Mississippi — looking forward to heading north to the Thousand Islands of Canada, at the New York border, for a concert May 4.
