TIMELESS

Dukes of Dixieland

Label: Leisure Jazz

Here's to 32 Great Years

Dixieland

Performance: 4

Sound: 2

*** O's Notes: If you dig that swinging New Orleans style jazz, this is your ticket to happiness. There are four CDs (over 4 hours) of first class Dixie music. There are more than 50 songs from all of their releases since 1975. These guys have been playing for thirty-two years and are still cooking. The intertwined brass melodies and whistling clarinet on top of a marching band is what defines Dixie music. The Dukes have perfected it. This is a great sampling of their best stuff.

USA TODAY Review, "Timeless"

from USA TODAY, Weekend Edition

December 1 - 3, 2006

"BOX SET BOUNTY, FOR NOW
A vast variety of choices, but shelf space is shrinking

 by Edna Gundersen"

"This year's box-set subjects range from The Byrds to Phish, Fats Waller to Tiny Tim and Duke Ellington to the Dukes of Dixieland. Despite staggering variety that finds Goth compilations and funk collections sharing shelf space with toasts to jazz legends and bundles of Motown singles, one thing is clear: The shelf is getting smaller....."

 "Dukes of Dixieland: Timeless

(Leisure Jazz, 4 CDs, $42)

Essence: 58 tunes from 16 albums recorded between 1974-2006 capture the history of the New Orleans group whose music encompasses traditional jazz, Dixieland, blues, gospel, swing and pop. Extras: A 20-page color discography."

"TIMELESS" REVIEW

Knight-Ridder Newswire

If you're shopping for a Christmas gift for a trad jazz fan or jazz/rock fusion aficionado, then [two] new boxed sets could go to the top of your list.

In terms of longevity, productivity and enthusiasm, New Orleans' Own DUKES of Dixieland have virtually become an international brand name for New Orleans music. a group so determined and committed that not even Katrina could slow down its tempo, the DUKES commemorate their own personal history with the boxed set, "Timeless" (Leisure Jazz, $29.99), a 4-CD package of 58 tracks and four hours of music recorded over the last 30 years on 16 albums.

After Katrina, the DUKES dedicated themselves to an energetic fund-raising campaign for their belove, storm-ravaged hometown and were honored by the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund for their efforts.

Last April, in a sign of their own resilience as well as that of New Orleans itself, the DUKES helped open the Crescent City's famous Jazz and Heritage Festival.

On the "Timeless" collection, which includes a 20-page historical discography, they celebrate by roasting such trad jazz chestnuts as "Muskrat Ramble," "Tiger Rag," and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue."

DUKES OF DIXIELAND

New Orleans Mardi Gras (Leisure)

Jazz Times review
June 2006 issue

This project was started in October 2004 and was finally finished in August 2005, just a few days before Katrina devastated much of New Orleans. Essentially a collection of familiar tunes heard during Mardi Gras season dressed up in a new suit of clothes, it features some hip, punchy horn arrangements by guitarist Charlie Brent and showcases the potent field-holler vocals of New Orleans' own resident blues dynamo Luther Kent.
